Buying, price and refunds14
Is this a subscription or do I pay once?
Try the examples and keep one own project free. Stitch, close and resume it. Buy the full version once for more projects and advanced design tools. No subscription. One own project can stay saved for free. Deleting it frees the slot. Failed imports do not use a slot. Existing projects, progress and purchases stay accessible.
What can I do before buying?
Try the examples and keep one own project free. Stitch, close and resume it. Buy the full version once for more projects and advanced design tools. No subscription. One own project can stay saved for free. Deleting it frees the slot. Failed imports do not use a slot. Existing projects, progress and purchases stay accessible.
I have both an iPhone and an iPad. Do I have to buy it twice?
No. One purchase covers Tondo on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac linked to your Apple ID. iCloud sync between those devices is included in that same purchase.
Can my family use it too?
On Apple devices, yes: Tondo supports Family Sharing, so up to five family members in the same Family Sharing group can use it without buying separately. Google Play does not share in-app purchases through Family Library, so on Android the unlock belongs to the Google account that bought it.
Is Tondo on Android too?
From Tondo 2.0, an App Store or Google Play Pro purchase linked to your Tondo account also unlocks Pro on the other platform. Sign in to Tondo on the device where you bought Pro so the app can link the verified purchase, then use the same Tondo account on your other devices. Apple and Google sign-ins are separate accounts unless you link them on the account page, even with the same email address. Store purchases can still be restored without a Tondo account. From Tondo 2.0, Tondo sync keeps knitting and fabric projects in step on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It needs Pro, the same Tondo account on each device and automatic sync enabled in Settings > Tondo-account. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects continue to use your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro; they do not sync to Android through Tondo sync.
Will Tondo ever switch to a subscription and lock me out of features I already paid for?
No. Tondo is a one-time purchase: you pay once, and what you buy stays yours. The one-time model is deliberate, not a placeholder.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds go through the store you bought from. Bought on the App Store? Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com and Apple handles it directly. Bought on Google Play? Request one from your order history at play.google.com. If something in the app is not working as expected, feel free to reach out at support@tondomakers.com first and we will try to fix it.
I got a new iPhone. Do I need to buy Tondo again?
No. Download Tondo with the same App Store account, then use Restore Purchases in Settings or on the paywall if Pro is not shown. To recover projects through iCloud, use the same iCloud account and make sure the old device finished syncing. A .tondo export is another way to move your projects.
The store shows a different price or currency than €15.99. Which is correct?
Apple and Google each set the local price for their own storefront and currency, so the amount you see at purchase may differ from the euro amount shown here. The price the store shows at purchase is the one that applies.
I lost my purchase or it is not showing as bought. How do I restore it?
Open Tondo, tap the gear icon in the library to open Settings, and choose Restore Purchases (it is also on the paywall). This asks the store you bought from (Apple or Google Play) to verify your prior transaction and unlocks the full app. If restore does not work, check that you are signed in with the Apple ID or Google account you bought with, or contact support@tondomakers.com. For a website purchase, sign in to the same Tondo account used for the purchase and refresh its licence status. Store purchase restoration does not restore a website licence.
What exactly do I get free, and what does the one-time purchase unlock?
Try the examples and keep one own project free. Stitch, close and resume it. Buy the full version once for more projects and advanced design tools. No subscription. One own project can stay saved for free. Deleting it frees the slot. Failed imports do not use a slot. Existing projects, progress and purchases stay accessible.
Does Tondo work on my Mac as well as my iPhone and iPad?
Yes. The native Mac app needs macOS 14.4 or later and supports compatible Intel and Apple silicon Macs. The same App Store Pro purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Mac. iCloud sync uses the same iCloud account on each device.
Will this update affect my existing projects or purchase?
Your existing projects and progress stay accessible. Your lifetime purchase remains valid; you do not need to buy again. Use Restore Purchases with the same store account if the unlock is not shown.
How will I know when a Tondo update is available?
From version 1.2.0, Tondo can show an Update available row in your library when a newer version is available for your device in its store. Tap the row to open the App Store or Google Play. The cross hides that version for seven days. Checking requires a connection. You can keep stitching without updating. Older versions do not have this notice; check the store to install 1.2.0 first.
Hand embroidery and transfer sheets12
How is hand embroidery different from cross stitch in Tondo?
Cross stitch uses a counted grid and marks progress cell by cell. Hand embroidery keeps a picture, thread plan, stitch choices and notes while you work the design on fabric. Mark each thread complete instead of counting individual crosses. Both types live in the project library.
How do I start a hand-embroidery project?
Choose Hand embroidery in the new-project flow, or select it after opening a photo. Name your project, choose a hoop, fabric and thread setup, and review the suggested DMC colours or add threads yourself. Preparation is free. Keep one own project free; additional projects require Pro.
What does Tondo do with a photo for hand embroidery?
It prepares a source preview, a transfer outline and up to twelve suggested DMC colours. It estimates how much of the picture each shade covers and keeps threads you already selected. Review the suggestions and choose stitches yourself. It does not automatically turn every shape into stitch instructions. Processing stays on your device.
Can I try hand embroidery without buying Pro?
Yes. Open the included botanical wreath. It has six thread colours, assigned stitches, artwork, instructions and an actual-size PDF transfer sheet. You can use the example and track its thread completion free. Preparation is free. Keep one own project free; additional projects require Pro.
Which hand-embroidery stitches are included?
The library has ten stitches: running, back, stem, split, satin, long and short, chain, lazy daisy, French knot and fishbone. They are grouped by line, fill and decorative use. Each has a diagram, needle directions and advice on when to use it. Assign a stitch to each thread in your plan.
How do I choose my hoop, fabric, thread and needle?
In the project setup, choose a hoop from 3 to 12 inches; centimetres are shown too. Select the fabric and whether it is dark, then the thread type and strand count or thickness. Tondo uses this setup for cloth-size and needle guidance. Hand embroidery uses uncounted fabrics such as cotton, linen, denim or felt rather than a cross-stitch fabric count.
Can Tondo estimate how much embroidery thread I need?
Assign a stitch and enter an area, line length or stitch count to calculate a thread estimate. Photo plans suggest colour coverage, which you can adjust. Hoop size, strands and thread type affect the result. Area coverage is saved with the plan; line lengths and stitch counts are calculation inputs. Some thread types have no supported skein length, so a buying estimate may be unavailable. Allow for your own technique and waste.
How do I make and print a transfer sheet?
Open the design or the Transfer to fabric section in a hand-embroidery project. Choose a picture and Simple, Balanced or Fine detail, then export a one-page PDF sized for your selected hoop. Print at actual size or 100%, without Fit to page. Larger hoops need suitable paper or tiling in your print software. Check the printed scale before transferring it to fabric.
Which transfer method should I choose?
Record your fabric and whether it is dark. Tondo offers suitable choices from window tracing, dressmaker’s carbon paper, water-soluble stabiliser, an iron-on transfer pen, tissue paper and prick and pounce. Follow the guidance for the selected method and test your material on a scrap, particularly if heat, water or permanent marks are involved.
Why is my transfer sheet mirrored?
The iron-on transfer pen method applies the design ink-down, which reverses it on the fabric. Tondo mirrors that sheet so the transferred design reads correctly. Other methods use a normal-facing sheet. Check the selected method before printing, especially for lettering.
How do I track progress or change a thread plan?
Mark each thread done as you finish its work. Open a thread to choose its stitch and coverage. Progress on existing projects stays accessible; adding or changing the thread plan requires Pro. Project notes and finishing steps stay alongside the design. Apple devices can sync through your own iCloud with Pro; Android uses local storage and manual Tondo-file transfers.
My photo outline is too busy or has no useful detail. What can I do?
Try Simple for fewer edges or Fine for more, and use a clear, well-lit picture with a distinct subject. The outline follows visible image edges, so shadows and textured backgrounds can create unwanted lines. Compare the preview with the source and simplify the design before transferring it. The botanical wreath includes a prepared outline you can use to try printing.
Importing your charts16
Which PDFs can I import? Do Etsy, magazine, and independent designer charts work?
Tondo can read PDF cross-stitch charts from many designers, shops, magazines and books. Compatibility depends on the layout and quality of the file. Preview the grid, symbols and thread key before saving; some charts need review or calibration and some cannot be read reliably.
My chart is a scanned image or photo-only PDF with no editable text. Will it import?
Tondo attempts to read scanned or image-only charts by finding the grid and matching the printed symbols. Scans always require review. Resolution, blur, perspective and missing grid lines can prevent a reliable result. Check the preview against the original and use grid calibration when it is offered.
Can I use my phone camera to import a paper chart I own?
On a phone or tablet, use the camera or pick a photo of a printed chart. Tondo attempts to read its grid and symbols and asks you to check the result. A photo of a subject can instead become a counted cross-stitch pattern or a hand-embroidery plan: choose the craft in the photo flow. On Mac, choose an existing image; there is no in-app camera capture.
I have a multi-page book PDF. Do I have to import the whole thing at once?
Use the page picker to choose the pages you need. Separate charts in a book can become separate projects; tiled pages belonging to one chart can join into a continuous canvas. Where a page contains distinct motifs, Tondo can offer them individually. Preparation is free. Keep one own project free; additional projects require Pro.
Will Tondo handle a huge full-coverage or confetti chart with hundreds of symbols?
Tondo supports large full-coverage charts, but import and scrolling depend on the file and device. Preview your own chart before buying. Highlight one colour, lock marking to it and use find-next or the magnifier for dense sections. The confetti assessment and Highlight confetti option help locate isolated stitches.
Can I still view the original PDF after importing?
Yes. The original PDF stays attached to the chart and is one tap away at any time, so you can cross-reference the designer's colour notes, copyright page, or any detail that did not come through in the parsed canvas.
My chart imported oddly: symbols look wrong, the grid is off, or colours are mismatched. What should I do?
Compare the preview with the original. Use grid calibration for a misplaced scan grid and confirm uncertain thread assignments. On a saved chart, you can change a thread, merge entries or correct a single misread cell; design changes require Pro. If the same file keeps failing, send its format, app version and a description to support@tondomakers.com.
Can Tondo open XSD, OXS, or PAT pattern files from my stitching software?
Tondo supports OXS, Pattern Maker XSD, supported PCStitch PAT versions, FlossCross, KXStitch, Crosti, Stitch Art Easy and other chart formats. Support can differ by file version. Review the imported result and its warnings. Encrypted or unsupported formats may need a PDF or OXS export from the original program. The Formats page lists the supported and recognised formats.
Can Tondo design or edit a cross-stitch pattern for me?
Yes. Choose Draw your own to start with a blank grid and DMC colours. Use the brush, fill, eyedropper and undo, and add colours as you work. You can also turn a photo into a counted pattern and tune it. Saved charts support thread replacement, merging and individual cell correction. Preparation is free. Keep one own project free; additional projects require Pro.
My chart is spread over several pages with overlap between them. Will it stitch into one canvas correctly?
Tondo can join tiled pages into one canvas, but overlap and layout vary by designer. Compare the preview with the original and review any alignment warning before saving. Separate designs from a book should remain separate projects. If pages are joined incorrectly, contact support@tondomakers.com with the file and the pages involved.
Can I import the same chart twice, or re-import it if I want to start over?
When Tondo recognises an already imported file, it offers the existing chart. To start again, use Duplicate from the project menu for a fresh copy, or re-import the kept original. Saving a new copy requires Pro; the original project and its progress remain available.
What happens if an import fails or I delete a project?
One own project can stay saved for free. Deleting it frees the slot. Failed imports do not use a slot. Existing projects, progress and purchases stay accessible.
Can I continue an interrupted book import?
If a multi-page import was interrupted, look for Continue import in the library. It resumes the pending import. Preparation is free. Keep one own project free; additional projects require Pro.
How do I improve a photo-to-pattern preview?
Adjust the width in stitches, number of colours, fabric shade, dithering and confetti reduction. Reframe the subject, lock a colour you want to keep, replace or merge threads, and use the cell editor for details. These are counted-pattern controls; a hand-embroidery photo plan provides an outline and thread suggestions instead.
Can I adjust a saved photo pattern without losing progress?
Use Adjust pattern from the project menu when Tondo has kept the generation settings. It reopens your settings and edits. Saving replaces an unstitched original; if it already has stitching progress, the adjusted pattern saves as a copy. Saving either change requires Pro.
Can I trace a chart that Tondo cannot read?
When the import flow offers manual reconstruction, use the original page under a grid and place the stitches yourself with the drawing tools. Check its dimensions and thread assignments carefully. This is manual chart creation; Tondo has not verified the unreadable symbols. Preparation is free. Keep one own project free; additional projects require Pro.
Stitching and the workbench16
How do I mark stitches? Do I have to tap each one individually?
You can tap a cell to mark it, or swipe across a row (including diagonals) to mark several in one stroke. For larger areas, a flood fill marks every connected cell sharing the same symbol, and a block-fill covers a 10×10 square at once.
I accidentally marked a whole area. Can I undo it?
Undo steps back through your last ten marking actions; Redo reapplies an action you undid. On iPad or Mac with a keyboard, use Cmd+Z and Shift+Cmd+Z. On Android with a keyboard, use Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z.
How do I mark only one colour without accidentally hitting neighbouring symbols?
Tap a colour in the legend to activate the marking filter: a lock badge shows which colour is highlighted, and all taps and swipes then mark only that symbol. Tap the badge again to release the filter.
I'm working on a large section and keep losing my place. Is there a way to jump to the next unmarked stitch?
While a colour is highlighted in the marking filter, use the find-next button to scroll the canvas to the next remaining cell of that colour; it pulses briefly so you can spot it quickly, and it wraps around when it reaches the edge.
Can Tondo track backstitch and fractional stitches separately from the main cross?
Long-press a cell to set its stitch type and track specialty completion. Supported imports can also bring in separate backstitch lines, knots, beads or fractional elements, which you mark individually. These contribute to overall progress. Check the import report for details the file reader could not place.
What is parking and how does it work in Tondo?
Parking is a stitching method where you leave a thread resting in a nearby corner while you move across the fabric. Long-press a cell in Tondo and choose any of its four corners to place a coloured dot; Tondo shows a per-colour parked count and lets you jump to any parked position.
The finish estimate says 'about 8 weeks to go'. Is that a deadline or a target?
It is neither. The calm estimate is based on your own recorded pace over real stitching days and is shown only after you have two or more active days logged. Tondo never assigns a deadline or sends reminders; it is there if you find it useful, not to create pressure.
Can I adjust how the canvas looks (grid lines, centre marks, that kind of thing)?
Canvas settings let you control grid weight and interval, toggle centre lines, adjust colour strength and switch mark style. High-contrast marks and the symbols-only view help when colour alone is hard to read. The progress display chooses its percentage precision automatically.
I finished stitching a colour entirely. Can I clear all its remaining marks at once, if I made an error or on purpose?
Bulk-clear removes every marked stitch for a given colour in one step. It is available from the colour's entry in the legend, and it counts as a single undoable action within the 10-step undo ring.
Can I mark stitches by swiping a whole row or diagonal line at once?
Yes. Alongside tapping single cells, you can swipe (including diagonally) to mark a run of stitches in one gesture.
Is there a faster way to fill a large solid block of one colour than swiping every cell?
Yes: use area-fill to flood a whole connected region of the same symbol, or block-fill to mark a 10x10 grid square at once.
If I mark a stitch by mistake right after several others, how far back can I undo?
Undo steps back through your last ten marking actions; Redo reapplies an action you undid. On iPad or Mac with a keyboard, use Cmd+Z and Shift+Cmd+Z. On Android with a keyboard, use Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z.
Can I ask Siri or use the Action Button to jump straight back into the chart I'm working on?
On supported Apple devices, add Tondo’s resume-chart action in Shortcuts. You can run it through Siri or assign the Shortcut to the Action Button on a compatible iPhone. It opens your current chart. Android does not use Apple Shortcuts.
Does Tondo give any feedback when I mark a stitch, like a tap I can feel?
Supported phones give a small haptic tap when you mark a stitch. Availability depends on the device; a Mac does not provide phone-style haptic marking feedback.
How do I flag a stitch to unpick later?
Long-press the cell and choose the unpick or frogging flag. It marks the work you want to revisit without changing the stitched count. You can check the flagged count for a colour and clear the flag after correcting your work.
Can I use a magnifier or a symbols-only view?
Use the floating magnifier to inspect a small area, or choose Symbols only in the canvas appearance settings. You can also adjust grid lines and centre marks, jump to the chart centre and use high-contrast marks. On iPhone and iPad, VoiceOver reads and marks visible cells when you zoom in far enough.
Sync, devices and your data11
Does Tondo use my own iCloud account, or does it go through your servers?
From Tondo 2.0, Tondo sync keeps knitting and fabric projects in step on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It needs Pro, the same Tondo account on each device and automatic sync enabled in Settings > Tondo-account. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects continue to use your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro; they do not sync to Android through Tondo sync.
If I delete the app by accident, will I lose all my progress?
Only completed syncs, exports or backups can restore lost data. From Tondo 2.0, sign in to the same Tondo account with Pro and enable Tondo sync to restore synced knitting and fabric projects, including on Android. For cross-stitch and hand embroidery on Apple devices, use the same iCloud account. Check sync status before removing the app or changing devices and keep a .tondo export. Device-local statistics are not restored by either sync route.
Can I use Tondo on my iPhone and my iPad and have them stay in sync?
From Tondo 2.0, Tondo sync keeps knitting and fabric projects in step on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It needs Pro, the same Tondo account on each device and automatic sync enabled in Settings > Tondo-account. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects continue to use your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro; they do not sync to Android through Tondo sync.
What happens if I stitch without an internet connection?
You can work on saved projects offline. From Tondo 2.0, changes to knitting and fabric projects wait locally until Tondo sync can connect, if you enabled it with Pro and a Tondo account. Apple devices also keep changes locally while iCloud is unavailable. Signing in, the community, syncing, purchases and restoring purchases need a connection.
Which devices and iOS versions does Tondo support?
Tondo supports iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, Android 8 or later, and compatible Intel or Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14.4 or later. The App Store Pro purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Mac; Google Play has its own purchase.
My iCloud is nearly full. What happens to Tondo's sync?
If iCloud runs out of space, new changes will queue locally and sync will pause until space is freed. Tondo shows a visible sync state so you can see when something is waiting; your local data is safe in the meantime.
I use an Android phone as well. Will my progress sync there?
From Tondo 2.0, Tondo sync keeps knitting and fabric projects in step on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It needs Pro, the same Tondo account on each device and automatic sync enabled in Settings > Tondo-account. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects continue to use your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro; they do not sync to Android through Tondo sync.
Can I get my data out of Tondo if I ever want to stop using it?
Use Settings > Move charts to another device to export the library as a .tondo file. For one project, open its menu in the library and choose Share as Tondo file. The file carries project data, originals and progress to another Tondo installation. Counted charts also offer per-thread progress as CSV. Keep an export outside the app before deleting local data.
Will you ever move Tondo to a subscription and lock me out of features I already paid for?
No. Tondo is a one-time purchase at €15.99, and what you buy stays yours. If you have questions about this, you can reach us at support@tondomakers.com.
Why isn't my newest progress showing on my other device yet?
Check the sync route for this project. From Tondo 2.0, knitting and fabric projects need Pro, the same Tondo account and automatic Tondo sync enabled on both devices. Cross-stitch and hand embroidery use the same iCloud account on Apple devices with Pro; check iCloud storage too. Open Tondo on both devices with a connection and read the sync status. If it stays stuck, send support@tondomakers.com the device names, app versions and sync message.
Can I transfer a hand-embroidery project between Apple and Android?
Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery charts, progress, notes and thread colours can move between Apple and Android as a .tondo file. Export from the project menu or Settings > Move charts to another device, then open it in Tondo on the other device. Later changes need another export. On Apple devices, these projects can sync through iCloud with Pro.
Threads and colours15
Which thread brands does Tondo support?
Tondo uses DMC colours and conversion tables for Anchor, Madeira, COSMO and Olympus. Conversions are nearest-shade matches, not identical physical threads. Check the displayed match quality and compare your actual thread or the designer’s key before substituting.
A colour in my chart looks wrong: the app picked the right symbol but the colour on screen is off. What can I do?
You can manually override the colour code for any symbol: tap the symbol in the legend, re-assign it to the correct DMC, Anchor, Madeira, COSMO, or Olympus code, and the canvas updates immediately. If you stitch across devices, that override syncs to your other Apple devices and back via your own iCloud. Automatic iCloud sync requires Pro on Apple devices; Android keeps this data locally.
Why do my colours look pale or washed out on the canvas?
Colour strength changes the background colour behind the chart symbols. Choose the strength that helps you read the chart, or select Symbols only for a black-and-white grid. Mark style is a separate setting for how completed work appears.
Can I search for a specific DMC thread number across all my charts?
Yes. The library search accepts both project names and floss codes; typing DMC 310, for example, surfaces every chart in your library that uses that colour. Sort options (name, progress, or recently opened) work alongside search.
I stitched over the shade card in my PDF. Can I still see the original?
The original PDF stays available one tap away from the chart view, so you can check the printed shade card, thread key, or any other detail from the designer at any time without leaving the app.
Will my manual colour overrides sync between my iPhone, iPad and Mac?
Yes. iCloud sync uses your own Apple account and Apple’s CloudKit. Tondo does not have access to your private iCloud charts or progress. From Tondo 2.0, the separate, optional Tondo sync route uses Tondo’s servers for knitting and fabric projects when enabled; it requires Pro and a Tondo account.
Does Tondo convert Anchor or Madeira codes to the nearest DMC shade, or does it just display the code?
It uses conversion tables to display a corresponding DMC shade while retaining the thread code. A conversion can be an approximation; the app shows match quality or an unresolved entry where appropriate. Compare physical threads before making a substitution.
Is there a way to focus on just one colour at a time when I'm working through a section?
Yes: tap a colour in the legend to activate the marking filter, and from that point taps and swipes mark only that colour. A lock badge shows which colour is active. You can also use the find-next feature to jump straight to the next unmarked stitch of that colour, which wraps around when it reaches the edge.
Do my thread colours and progress sync to Android?
Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery charts, progress, notes and thread colours can move between Apple and Android as a .tondo file. Export from the project menu or Settings > Move charts to another device, then open it in Tondo on the other device. Later changes need another export. On Apple devices, these projects can sync through iCloud with Pro.
Does Tondo support COSMO or Olympus threads?
Yes. Tondo includes COSMO and Olympus conversion tables alongside Anchor and Madeira. These map to the nearest supported DMC shade; they do not guarantee an identical physical colour.
If I re-code a symbol to a different thread, does that change every chart or just this one?
A manual colour override applies to the chart you're working on, and it syncs to your other devices via iCloud; it doesn't touch your other charts. Automatic iCloud sync requires Pro on Apple devices; Android keeps this data locally.
I'm colour-blind. Can Tondo make the symbols easier to tell apart?
Yes. A high-contrast / colour-blind mode adds a bold outline and a shape-based glyph to each mark, so colours aren't the only thing distinguishing symbols.
Can I keep a thread stash and make a shopping list?
Mark the threads you own in the stash and add dye-lot notes. The project’s thread list compares required colours with your owned threads and shows what you still need. It does not track stock quantities. You can sort and search the list, and thread-use estimates depend on your fabric and strand settings.
Can I use blended threads or combine duplicate colours?
Supported two-thread blends appear together as one palette entry with both codes. Check the component threads before stitching. With Pro, you can also merge two palette entries or replace a thread on a saved chart. The change applies to that chart; your other projects keep their own palettes.
How do I calculate fabric size and floss for a cross-stitch chart?
Set the project fabric count, whether you stitch over one or two threads, the strand count and the mounting margin. The fabric calculator shows finished and cut dimensions, and the thread list estimates skeins. Treat these as estimates and compare them with the designer’s instructions. Hand embroidery has its own hoop and coverage settings.
Library and projects15
How do I organise my charts so I can find them quickly?
You can sort your library by name, progress, or recently opened, and search by project name or floss code; typing DMC 310, for example, surfaces every chart that uses that thread. Tags (WIP, On Hold, Finished, plus any custom ones you add) let you group charts by status, and they sync to your other devices through your own iCloud. Automatic iCloud sync requires Pro on Apple devices; Android keeps this data locally.
How do I mark a project as finished, or put it on hold?
Open the project, tap the tag area, and choose WIP, On Hold, or Finished; you can also create your own custom tags. Tags sync automatically across your iPhone, iPad and Mac, so the status stays consistent wherever you stitch. Automatic iCloud sync requires Pro on Apple devices; Android keeps this data locally.
Can I add notes to a project (for example, which fabric I used or where I left off)?
Yes, each project has a notes field you can write freely in. Notes sync via iCloud alongside your progress, so they travel with the chart to your iPad or Mac. Automatic iCloud sync requires Pro on Apple devices; Android keeps this data locally.
I stitch with a group that has a stitch-along schedule. Can Tondo help me follow the parts?
Add stitch-along parts to your project, record their dates and mark each part complete as you work. Project metadata can sync through your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro. This is your own checklist; Tondo does not share a live group schedule with other stitchers.
Where can I see how much I stitched today, and over time?
The stats screen shows today's stitch count, your current streak, a 7-day bar chart, and a 52-week heatmap so you can see patterns in your own stitching pace over the year. Each chart also has a palette ring that shows progress broken down by colour. All stats are stored locally on your device and are not synced.
Can I search for all the charts that use a specific thread colour?
Yes. The search field in the library accepts a floss code such as DMC 815 and returns every chart in your collection that includes that colour. This works for DMC codes natively, and Tondo resolves Anchor, Madeira, COSMO, and Olympus codes to their verified DMC equivalents as well.
How do I delete a chart I no longer want to track?
Open the project’s menu in the library and choose Delete. On Apple devices with Pro and iCloud sync, deletion can propagate to your other devices. Android deletes the local project. Use Archive if you just want it out of the active list, or keep a .tondo export before deleting it.
Are my library and tags backed up, or will I lose everything if I get a new phone?
Only completed syncs, exports or backups can restore lost data. From Tondo 2.0, sign in to the same Tondo account with Pro and enable Tondo sync to restore synced knitting and fabric projects, including on Android. For cross-stitch and hand embroidery on Apple devices, use the same iCloud account. Check sync status before removing the app or changing devices and keep a .tondo export. Device-local statistics are not restored by either sync route.
Do I need a subscription to keep using my library?
Try the examples and keep one own project free. Stitch, close and resume it. Buy the full version once for more projects and advanced design tools. No subscription. Your existing projects and progress stay accessible. Your lifetime purchase remains valid; you do not need to buy again. Use Restore Purchases with the same store account if the unlock is not shown.
Can I export my progress to use it somewhere else?
For a counted chart, use Export progress for a CSV of per-thread progress. For a transferable project or backup, open its menu in the library and choose Share as Tondo file, or export the library from Settings > Move charts to another device.
Does my stitch streak and history sync between my devices?
No. Daily counts, streaks and activity history stay on each device. Project data and stitching progress can sync through your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro. Android keeps its project data locally and uses manual .tondo transfers.
How do I find a chart again if I have a lot of them?
Sort your library by name, progress or recently-opened, and search by chart name or by floss code; searching DMC 310, for example, surfaces every chart that uses it.
Can I archive finished projects without deleting them?
Use Archive to move a chart out of your active library and return to it from the archive. You can also rename projects or organise them with tags. Deleting is different: synced deletions can reach your other Apple devices, so export a project first if you want to keep a separate copy. Automatic iCloud sync requires Pro on Apple devices; Android keeps this data locally.
Where do I keep reference photos, designer credits and finishing notes?
Keep reference photos and notes with the project, record its designer or source, and use the finishing checklist for steps such as washing, blocking, framing or gifting. The original imported chart remains available for checking instructions. On Apple devices with Pro, supported project data and reference photos sync through your own iCloud.
Can I share a picture of my finished work?
On a completed counted chart, use the sharing action in the finish screen to share a progress image. This is a picture to show someone; use Share as Tondo file from the library menu when you want to transfer an editable project and its progress.
Privacy, trust and account12
Does Tondo upload my charts to your servers?
From Tondo 2.0, the optional Tondo account uses Tondo’s servers for account access, licences, Tondo sync and the community. Signing in alone does not upload your projects. When you enable Tondo sync, knitting and fabric projects and their attachments are uploaded. Community content you choose to share is sent to the community service. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects use your own iCloud on Apple devices; local statistics stay on the device.
Do you sell my data or share it with advertisers?
No. Tondo has no ads or third-party tracking. Nothing is sold or shared with advertisers.
Do I need to create an account to use Tondo?
You can use local projects without a public profile. From Tondo 2.0, an optional Tondo account gives access to Tondo sync, account licences and the community. Community participation uses a profile; your private synced projects are not automatically published. You choose what to share.
My stats show my daily stitch count. Does that get synced or sent anywhere?
Your daily count, streak, and heatmap are stored locally on your device only. They are not synced to iCloud, not sent to oomny, and not visible to anyone else.
Who is oomny?
oomny builds and maintains Tondo. You can contact us at support@tondomakers.com for help with the app.
Can I contact a real person if I have a problem?
Yes. Reach the developer directly at support@tondomakers.com and you will get a reply from the person who built the app, not a support bot.
Is the iCloud sync private? Can oomny see what I'm stitching?
iCloud sync uses your own Apple account and Apple’s CloudKit. Tondo does not have access to your private iCloud charts or progress. From Tondo 2.0, the separate, optional Tondo sync route uses Tondo’s servers for knitting and fabric projects when enabled; it requires Pro and a Tondo account.
Do I need a profile name or public account?
You can use local projects without a public profile. From Tondo 2.0, an optional Tondo account gives access to Tondo sync, account licences and the community. Community participation uses a profile; your private synced projects are not automatically published. You choose what to share.
Does Tondo show ads or contain any tracking?
No. Tondo has no ads or third-party tracking. Nothing is sold or shared with advertisers. From Tondo 2.0, the optional Tondo account uses Tondo’s servers for account access, licences, Tondo sync and the community. Signing in alone does not upload your projects. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects use your own iCloud on Apple devices; local statistics stay on the device.
Can I use Tondo completely offline, without ever signing in or going online?
You can work on saved projects offline. From Tondo 2.0, changes to knitting and fabric projects wait locally until Tondo sync can connect, if you enabled it with Pro and a Tondo account. Apple devices also keep changes locally while iCloud is unavailable. Signing in, the community, syncing, purchases and restoring purchases need a connection.
Is Tondo built with AI?
We develop our apps with AI tools for programming and translation. We use automated checks and device tests. We are responsible for the result, and a person answers support requests.
What does AI do inside Tondo?
Tondo turns photos into stitch patterns by calculating colours; on Apple devices, optional background removal uses Apple's on-device subject detection. It reads printed charts with on-device image recognition. You review imported scans before saving. On supported Apple devices, an on-device model can help match ambiguous symbols to threads, only where it agrees with Tondo's own reading. Pattern processing takes place on your device. Apple devices can also sync projects through your own iCloud, and an optional Tondo account syncs knitting and fabric projects between Apple devices and Android. Sharing with the community is optional. If you choose to share, your posts and photos are sent to the Tondo server. The server removes EXIF and location metadata from photos before storing them and filters post text. Published posts and photos are visible to signed-in community members. The illustrations in the app were made in advance with an image model and are marked as generated; nothing is generated while you use the app.
Troubleshooting11
I tried to import a PDF and it just says it failed. What went wrong?
Check that the file is a chart format Tondo supports and that any cloud download has finished. Scans need a readable grid and symbols; some layouts need calibration or manual correction. Read the import message. If it still fails, contact support@tondomakers.com with the app version, device, file type and the message shown.
The colours on my imported chart look completely wrong. They don't match my thread at all.
Compare the thread key in the original file with the imported palette. Incorrect symbol matching, an unreadable key or a nearest-shade conversion can produce unexpected colours. With Pro, correct the thread assignment or a misread cell. Send a reproducible example to support@tondomakers.com if the import repeatedly assigns the wrong thread.
I bought Tondo on my iPhone but my iPad is not showing my charts. How do I get them to appear?
Check the sync route for this project. From Tondo 2.0, knitting and fabric projects need Pro, the same Tondo account and automatic Tondo sync enabled on both devices. Cross-stitch and hand embroidery use the same iCloud account on Apple devices with Pro; check iCloud storage too. Open Tondo on both devices with a connection and read the sync status. If it stays stuck, send support@tondomakers.com the device names, app versions and sync message.
The screen keeps dimming while I'm stitching even though I thought Tondo kept it awake.
Open Settings > Canvas & stitching and check Keep screen on while stitching. The setting applies to the counted chart workbench. You can also open stitching settings from the chart menu. If the chart still dims, send your device, system version and Tondo version to support@tondomakers.com.
I tapped Restore Purchase and nothing seemed to happen. Did it work?
Use Restore Purchases in Settings or on the paywall, with the Apple or Google account you used to buy Tondo. You do not need to pay again. If your purchase is still missing after reopening the app online, contact support@tondomakers.com.
The app is getting sluggish when I scroll around a very large chart. Is that expected?
Very large charts can place more load on older devices. Reopen the app and check whether the slowdown affects one chart or every project. Contact support@tondomakers.com with your device, system and Tondo versions, chart size and the steps that slow down. If possible, include the chart so we can reproduce it.
I lost my stitching progress after reinstalling the app. Is there any way to recover it?
Only completed syncs, exports or backups can restore lost data. From Tondo 2.0, sign in to the same Tondo account with Pro and enable Tondo sync to restore synced knitting and fabric projects, including on Android. For cross-stitch and hand embroidery on Apple devices, use the same iCloud account. Check sync status before removing the app or changing devices and keep a .tondo export. Device-local statistics are not restored by either sync route.
How do I send you a chart that is causing problems?
The easiest way is to export the PDF from your Files app and email it to support@tondomakers.com along with a description of what goes wrong during import. If the chart is from a specific designer or is a scanned image, mention that too, as it helps us reproduce the issue faster.
I'm on the TestFlight beta. Where do I report bugs or give feedback?
You can send feedback directly through the TestFlight app using the shake gesture or the feedback button, which captures a screenshot automatically. For more detailed reports, especially if you have a problem chart to share, email support@tondomakers.com and mention you are on the beta build so we can match it to the right version.
Where are frogging flags, reference photos and material calculators?
Frogging flags are in the cell’s long-press menu. Reference photos are kept with project notes. Counted charts have fabric-size and floss estimates; hand-embroidery projects use hoop, fabric and thread setup with stitch-specific estimates. Check that you have the latest Tondo version, and contact support@tondomakers.com if you cannot find a control.
My raster or scanned chart imported but some cells look wrong. Why didn't Tondo just fix it?
Scanned and image-only charts always go through a review step rather than being auto-accepted, because recovering a grid from an image isn't perfect. Correct anything off in review before you start; if a page has no detectable grid, Tondo tells you honestly rather than guessing.
Knitting projects and counters7
How do I start a knitting project from my own pattern?
Choose Knitting when you start a new project and add your pattern: a PDF, photo, EPUB or DOCX file, a web link or a camera scan of paper pages. Tondo keeps the original file unchanged and remembers your place in each document. A knitting project counts towards the one free project of your own; more projects need Pro.
How do the row counters work?
Each project has a main counter and counters per part, with repeats and linked counters. Row actions such as a decrease, colour change or buttonhole each need their own tick. You can undo and redo, set a checkpoint, lock the controls and keep the screen awake. Voice commands work after you tap to listen.
How do I keep my place in the pattern?
Turn on the reading line in the working reader and move it row by row. The line and your bookmarks stay on the page when you zoom or turn the device. Confirm your size once and Tondo marks your numbers and covers the others. You can pin the legend, the size table and notes beside the pattern.
Can I count on my watch?
Yes. The Apple Watch app and the Wear OS app count rows, show row actions and progress, and run the project timer, also without the phone nearby. Counts and timer intervals made away from the phone are added once when the watch reconnects. Widgets, a Live Activity on iPhone and a notification or tile on Android show where you are.
How do I connect my Ravelry library?
Open Settings > Ravelry and choose Connect Ravelry; you need a Tondo account. Tondo then reads your library, purchased pattern files, projects, stash, favourites, queue and forums. It sends Ravelry only what you choose: a linked knitting project's progress and status, a photo, or a pattern for your queue or favourites. Ravelry allows 100 file downloads per member per day. Disconnect in the same place to delete Tondo's access at once. Pattern files you downloaded yourself always import through Files. Tondo is not affiliated with or endorsed by Ravelry.
Can I design my own knitting charts?
Yes. Start a blank stitch or colour chart and draw with pen, line, fill, selection and lasso, with undo. Tondo checks the stitch count of every row, turns a chart into written instructions and back, and exports PDF, SVG, DOCX or XLSX. Sized templates for socks, a hat, a sweater and a scarf recalculate for your gauge.
Where do I learn a new stitch?
Open Learn from the library. The stitch dictionary puts your pattern's own key first and knows nine abbreviation conventions. Twenty-four illustrated knitting lessons work for left- and right-handed knitters, with a transcript and still steps when Reduce Motion is on. Sixteen of Tondo's own patterns can be downloaded for offline use and started as a project.
Sewing with fabric scraps5
How do I add a fabric scrap?
Choose Sewing and open the fabric stash. Give each piece a photo or colour, its size in centimetres or inches, the material and a count; Tondo gives it a short code such as L-001. For an irregular piece, mark the usable regions and keep holes and seams outside them.
How does Tondo decide what fits?
For the project you pick, Tondo sorts your pieces into fits, fits after a change you confirm, too short and unsuitable, with the reason for each piece. Stretch knits, pile, leather and heavy fabrics are never planned automatically.
Which projects can I make?
An envelope cushion cover, a lined drawstring project bag and a quilted table runner, laid out as a square grid, rail fence or log cabin. Each recipe lists every piece, the materials and the steps. The cutting plan includes seam allowance, grain, print direction and a safety margin. Tondo checks every plan but does not claim it is the best possible one.
How do I print the templates?
Export the cutting plan as an A4 or Letter PDF with full-size templates and a 5 cm (2 inch) check square. Print at 100% and measure the square before you cut. The plan and the sewing checklist open offline on the step where you stopped.
What happens to my stash when I cut or delete a project?
Cutting records the pieces you used and keeps named remnants; you correct stock explicitly. Deleting a fabric project releases what it reserved, and the library offers Undo so you can restore it.
Community5
How do I join the community?
Open Settings > Tondomakers community, sign in with your Tondo account, choose a handle and accept the community rules. You must be 16 or older to join. The community is optional and free; the rest of Tondo works without it.
Who sees what I share?
Your profile, posts and comments are visible to signed-in community members, not on the open web. Before you share a project, a preview shows exactly what is sent: title, caption, milestone, row progress if you choose, materials and work photos. Pattern files, imported PDFs, scans, notes and a project's recipient are never shared, and photos lose their location data.
How do I report or block someone?
Open the menu on a post, comment or profile and choose Report or Block. A blocked member's posts and comments disappear for you, and yours for them; you can undo a block. For a copyright problem, use the rights claim. Reports reach a moderator by email, and each report is handled within 24 hours.
Can I publish my own patterns?
Yes, patterns you designed in Tondo. A new version is published as an update to the same pattern. Only your own designs can be published, and paid sales are not available.
How do I remove what I shared?
Delete a post or comment from its menu; it goes offline at once and its photos are erased from storage. Deleting your Tondo account removes your profile and everything you shared. Questions about moderation go to support@tondomakers.com.
Tondo sync between Apple and Android6
What does Tondo sync do?
From Tondo 2.0, Tondo sync keeps knitting and fabric projects in step on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It needs Pro, the same Tondo account on each device and automatic sync enabled in Settings > Tondo-account. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects continue to use your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro; they do not sync to Android through Tondo sync.
How do I turn Tondo sync on or off?
Sign in to your Tondo account in Settings and switch on Sync projects automatically. The status in the account screen and the library header shows whether Tondo is syncing, up to date, offline or waiting for your choice. Switch it off to keep projects and stash on this device; nothing is deleted.
Does it work between iPhone and Android?
From Tondo 2.0, Tondo sync keeps knitting and fabric projects in step on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. It needs Pro, the same Tondo account on each device and automatic sync enabled in Settings > Tondo-account. Cross-stitch and hand-embroidery projects continue to use your own iCloud on Apple devices with Pro; they do not sync to Android through Tondo sync.
What happens if I change the same project on two devices?
Tondo never adds up or overwrites counters silently. You see both versions side by side, with rows, counters, notes and status, and choose one. The other version is kept as a saved copy, and Review versions lets you decide later.
What happens when I delete a project?
Deleting a fabric project also removes it from your other devices. The library shows Undo, and a restorable copy stays on the device so you can bring it back. Knitting projects are archived rather than deleted.
How do I sign out a lost device or delete my account?
In the account screen you can sign out all other devices, so a lost one can no longer sync. You can also export your account data and delete your account there. Your projects stay usable on the device and can still be moved with a Tondo file.
Didn’t find it?
A chart that won’t open, a colour that looks off, or anything else: send it to support@tondomakers.com. If it’s a chart, attach the PDF; we treat your charts as purchased property and delete them after debugging.
